Nice big, stocky oranda with large head.  Powerful fish, and active for its size.

Big, impressive ryukin with excellent profile.  Great overall fish in large size.

This batch of red/white butterfly is one of the best I’ve had.  This large fish is extremely stout with huge tail and nice overall conformation.

Photos don’t do this pretty fish justice.  Rich chocolaty color and showy fins on this large broadtail.  Great overall fish that likes to show off.

Pretty young fish with large showy fins.

Hard to find color with nice overall form.  Active ranchu with nice egg-size body.  Hard to appreciate in the photos, color is very pretty in person and much different than typical goldfish.

Pretty color pattern on this nice oranda with cute head and showy fins.

Contrasty color pattern on this one really stands out.  Powerful ranchu, in large size, with smooth back.  Active for a ranchu, and very responsive when approached.

Compact ranchu with beautiful calico color and stout body.  Cute, friendly fish.  Nice overall young ranchu.

Nice, large, wrap-around tail on this one.  Great overall fish, and super showy.

Superb form on this one….nice rounded back, excellent tail-tuck, and cute neaty head.   This is my favorite red/white left, very friendly and responsive.  Great overall ranchu with lots more potential.

If you want to ADD a lb. of Soilent green to your FISH ORDER, please use this “buy it now” option.  This will add it to your fish invoice, and there will be no additional shipping charges when added to your fish shipment.   I don’t have another way implemented to add food to your order, so will be using this method for now.

If you want to BUY FOOD ONLY, please use the link on the homepage, which adds $5.80 to cover USPS Priority Shipping.

I have been advocating the use of moist food for years.  Moist food moves more easily through the digestive tract, results in more efficient nutrient assimilation, and also minimizes balance/buoyancy problems many fish have after eating dry food.  Unfortunately, most goldfish foods have no moisture content at all.   That’s because, with the exception of frozen foods, others would spoil and have no shelf-life.  So, most goldfish food is “dry as a bone”, and ultimately not the best for the fish, even if the ingredients are high quality.   Our fish farmers raise the goldfish on moist food, so it makes no sense to switch them to a dry diet after they are imported.  We’ve addressed this issue for years by “hydrating” all of the pellets we’ve fed.  This involved a slow process of introducing moisture and refrigerating pellets to make sure they were soft throughout, and not just wetted on the outside.   This made them like little meatballs, but they still held together and didn’t fall apart in the tank.  Well, we have quit messing around with pellets!  That’s because after months of trials, and many conversations with fellow hobbyists for over a year, we feel that Soilent Green is the best solution for the main staple in the Goldfish diet.  I used to make my own gel food, but it was time consuming, messy, and I never felt confident that the mix of ingredients was optimal.  Soilent Green solves these issues with an easy to make product.   Brought to a boil in a non-stick pan, and poured onto a non-stick cookie sheet, it gels quickly with little to no clean up.  Anything left in the pan gels up and peels right off.  Once a batch is made, we chop it up on a cutting board into bite size pieces and store in the fridge.  We are actually making pounds of it every other day, but the average hobbyist should be able to make a small batch every week or two, spending less than 15 minutes to do so.

I’ve always said that I’d rather concentrate on the fish, and not get into selling products or food.   That was mostly because I never felt enough confidence in any food that I wanted to promote or represent it.  The other reason is the nature of internet commerce.  Huge companies can offer some retail products for less than I can even get them wholesale.  Being a small business, it’s hard to compete, and I simply wasn’t going to try to.  I’d have to buy, stock, sell, and ship hundreds of pounds of food just to make a thousand dollars.  Again, it made sense to just focus on the fish, especially since that takes a huge amount of time already, and because goldfish is what Dandy Orandas does best.  : )

All of that being said, I have now decided to offer this Repashy Soilent Green.  After years of being asked about food, and seeing many people struggle with food related issues, I think this is a great solution.  Repashy has high quality ingredients, plus the moisture that I’ve always advocated, and we’ve seen great results using it.   Fish are active, healthy, with vibrant color and none of the goofy post-feeding buoyancy issues seen with dry foods.  Repashy also has a good relationship with its retailers, and sets MAP pricing for their products.  This is Minimum Advertised Pricing, which keeps huge sellers from undercutting small business.   So, you should see similar pricing no matter what the source, leaving you to support good merchants instead of buying simply based on price.   Speaking of price….Repashy does come in smaller quantities, but the unit cost is much more optimal at the 1lb. size.   We are stocking this size ONLY, since it is a better value.  While it is a lot of food, it does have a good shelf-life until gelled, so it shouldn’t go to waste.

SHIPPING INFO.  If you are getting fish, a 1lb. bag can be added to your shipment for no additional shipping cost.  If you are just getting food, then shipping will be via USPS priority mail, and will be $5.80, for a total of $27.80 delivered.  (Please note if just getting food, please use the link on the homepage for food.)

Big showy tail on this super active and responsive butterfly.  Very nice overall butterfly with lots more potential.

Only one available.  This color is hard to appreciate in the photos, and really stands out in a tank or from above in a pond, especially when lit by natural sunlight.  Eyes are super petite for a telescope, but red-eye is very unusual.  Showy, extremely active fish with long tail.   Truthfully, I’d like to keep this one, and hate to see it go, but just don’t have the room that it should have, and basically need the sales.  This is a great overall fish, and isn’t something you see regularly available.

Super friendly young ranchu with smooth back and pretty color pattern.  Looking at the fish in person, I realize the photos don’t really do this nice ranchu justice.  Great overall young fish with cute meaty head.

Spunky young ryukin with very cute profile, including upright dorsal.

Here since summer 2013, this one hasn’t grown much but has been very healthy and active.  Not likely to get large, this one would be great for someone with limited space.

Showy fins on this young tancho.   Very spunky and responsive fish with stout body.

When I was in China 10 years ago, I saw these in jumbo size (about 18 inches) with large headgrowth that looked like half a peach on their heads.  This young one shows nice overall potential and already has cute headgrowth forming.  (Side view shots are a bit overexposed, so color is washed out.  Top-view pics are more accurate)

Spunky young ryukin with pretty color pattern.
