We have been advocating the use of moist food for years.  Moist food moves more easily through the digestive tract, results in more efficient nutrient assimilation, and also minimizes balance/buoyancy problems many fish have after eating dry food.  Unfortunately, most goldfish foods have no moisture content at all.   That’s because, with the exception of frozen foods, others would spoil and have no shelf-life.  So, most goldfish food is “dry as a bone”, and ultimately not the best for the fish, even if the ingredients are high quality.   Our fish farmers raise the goldfish on moist food, so it makes no sense to switch them to a dry diet after they are imported.  We’ve addressed this issue for years by “hydrating” all of the pellets we’ve fed.  This involved a slow process of introducing moisture and refrigerating pellets to make sure they were soft throughout, and not just wetted on the outside.   This made them like little meatballs, but they still held together and didn’t fall apart in the tank.  Well, we have quit messing around with pellets!  That’s because after months of trials, and many conversations with fellow hobbyists for over a year, we feel that Soilent Green is the best solution for the main staple in the Goldfish diet.  I used to make my own gel food, but it was time consuming, messy, and I never felt confident that the mix of ingredients was optimal.  Soilent Green solves these issues with an easy to make product.   Brought to a boil in a non-stick pan, and poured onto a non-stick cookie sheet, it gels quickly with little to no clean up.  Anything left in the pan gels up and peels right off.  Once a batch is made, we chop it up on a cutting board into bite size pieces and store in the fridge.  We are actually making pounds of it every other day, but the average hobbyist should be able to make a small batch every week or two, spending less than 15 minutes to do so.

I’ve always said that I’d rather concentrate on the fish, and not get into selling products or food.   That was mostly because I never felt enough confidence in any food that I wanted to promote or represent it.  The other reason is the nature of internet commerce.  Huge companies can offer some retail products for less than I can even get them wholesale.  Being a small business, it’s hard to compete, and I simply wasn’t going to try to.  I’d have to buy, stock, sell, and ship hundreds of pounds of food just to make a thousand dollars.  Again, it made sense to just focus on the fish, especially since that takes a huge amount of time already, and because goldfish is what Dandy Orandas does best.  : )

All of that being said, I have now decided to offer this Repashy Soilent Green.  After years of being asked about food, and seeing many people struggle with food related issues, I think this is a great solution.  Repashy has high quality ingredients, plus the moisture that I’ve always advocated, and we’ve seen great results using it.   Fish are active, healthy, with vibrant color and none of the goofy post-feeding buoyancy issues seen with dry foods.  Repashy also has a good relationship with its retailers, and sets MAP pricing for their products.  This is Minimum Advertised Pricing, which keeps huge sellers from undercutting small business.   So, you should see similar pricing no matter what the source, leaving you to support good merchants instead of buying simply based on price.   Speaking of price….Repashy does come in smaller quantities, but the unit cost is much more optimal at the 1lb. size.   We are stocking this size ONLY, since it is a better value.  While it is a lot of food, it does have a good shelf-life until gelled, so it shouldn’t go to waste.

SHIPPING INFO.  If you are getting fish, a 1lb. bag can be added to your shipment for no additional shipping cost.  If you are just getting food, then shipping will be via USPS priority mail, and will be $6.00, for a total of $31 delivered.  (Please note if just getting food, the website might show higher shipping after ordering.)   This is because it is designed to calculate shipping for Overnight Service for fish deliveries.  We will be making updates to the shipping calculators to accommodate the sales of food.  We also do not have a shopping cart, so payment info is still taken over the phone, and details are confirmed in person.
