These have proven to be quite robust, and everyone that’s bought one has expressed surprise at the actual size.  Sometimes it’s hard to appreciate how big some of these fish are from the photos.  Pretty calico color on this one, including subtle blues.  Great overall fish, active and responsive, with nice motion and balance.

FINAL auction of the Year!  Rather than try to take advantage of “Holiday Sales” next week, I am opting to not have any more auctions after this weekend.  That’s because the last two years I had too many problems trying to ship fish the week of, and after, Christmas.  I’m just not going to take the chance with these fish.  So, while I normally offer to hold fish for up to two weeks, I need to ask everyone to take delivery of their fish by December 19th.  Please take this into consideration before you bid.  There will be no more auctions until early January.

I have been advocating the use of moist food for years.  Moist food moves more easily through the digestive tract, results in more efficient nutrient assimilation, and also minimizes balance/buoyancy problems many fish have after eating dry food.  Unfortunately, most goldfish foods have no moisture content at all.   That’s because, with the exception of frozen foods, others would spoil and have no shelf-life.  So, most goldfish food is “dry as a bone”, and ultimately not the best for the fish, even if the ingredients are high quality.   Our fish farmers raise the goldfish on moist food, so it makes no sense to switch them to a dry diet after they are imported.  We’ve addressed this issue for years by “hydrating” all of the pellets we’ve fed.  This involved a slow process of introducing moisture and refrigerating pellets to make sure they were soft throughout, and not just wetted on the outside.   This made them like little meatballs, but they still held together and didn’t fall apart in the tank.  Well, we have quit messing around with pellets!  That’s because after months of trials, and many conversations with fellow hobbyists for over a year, we feel that Soilent Green is the best solution for the main staple in the Goldfish diet.  I used to make my own gel food, but it was time consuming, messy, and I never felt confident that the mix of ingredients was optimal.  Soilent Green solves these issues with an easy to make product.   Brought to a boil in a non-stick pan, and poured onto a non-stick cookie sheet, it gels quickly with little to no clean up.  Anything left in the pan gels up and peels right off.  Once a batch is made, we chop it up on a cutting board into bite size pieces and store in the fridge.  We are actually making pounds of it every other day, but the average hobbyist should be able to make a small batch every week or two, spending less than 15 minutes to do so. I’ve always said that I’d rather concentrate on the fish, and not get into selling products or food.   That was mostly because I never felt enough confidence in any food that I wanted to promote or represent it.  The other reason is the nature of internet commerce.  Huge companies can offer some retail products for less than I can even get them wholesale.  Being a small business, it’s hard to compete, and I simply wasn’t going to try to.  I’d have to buy, stock, sell, and ship hundreds of pounds of food just to make a thousand dollars.  Again, it made sense to just focus on the fish, especially since that takes a huge amount of time already, and because goldfish is what Dandy Orandas does best.  : ) All of that being said, I have now decided to offer this Repashy Soilent Green.  After years of being asked about food, and seeing many people struggle with food related issues, I think this is a great solution.  Repashy has high quality ingredients, plus the moisture that I’ve always advocated, and we’ve seen great results using it.   Fish are active, healthy, with vibrant color and none of the goofy post-feeding buoyancy issues seen with dry foods.  Repashy also has a good relationship with its retailers, and sets MAP pricing for their products.  This is Minimum Advertised Pricing, which keeps huge sellers from undercutting small business.   So, you should see similar pricing no matter what the source, leaving you to support good merchants instead of buying simply based on price.   Speaking of price….Repashy does come in smaller quantities, but the unit cost is much more optimal at the 1lb. size.   We are stocking this size ONLY, since it is a better value.  While it is a lot of food, it does have a good shelf-life until gelled, so it shouldn’t go to waste. SHIPPING INFO.  If you are getting fish, a 1lb. bag can be added to your shipment for no additional shipping cost.  If you are just getting food, then shipping will be via USPS priority mail, and will be $5.80, for a total of $27.80 delivered.  (Please note if just getting food, please use the link on the homepage for food.) NET WEIGHT 16 OZ / 454 GRAMS  (makes approximately 4 times the amount once gelled, mixed at 1 part powder/3 parts water)   Meal Replacement Gel for Aufwuchs (algae and small living organisms) eating species of Fish, Invertebrates, Amphibians and Reptiles.   INGREDIENTS: Chlorella Algae, Spirulina Algae, Whole Krill Meal, Whole Squid Meal, Whole Sardine Meal, Alfalfa Leaf Meal, Whole Anchovy Meal, Germinated Brown Rice Protein Concentrate, Pea Protein Isolate, Dried Brewers Yeast, Stabilized Rice Bran, Dried Kelp, Carrageenan Algae, Konjac, Carob Bean Gum, Schizochytrium Algae, Calcium Carbonate, Dicalcium Phosphate, Taurine, Potassium Citrate, Calcium Propionate, Phaffia Rhodozyma Yeast, Paprika Extract, Calendula Flower Powder, Marigold Flower Extract, Rose Hips Powder, Turmeric Root Powder, Malic Acid, Sodium Chloride, Canthaxanthin, Potassium Sorbate, Magnesium Gluconate, Lecithin, Rosemary Extract and Mixed Tocopherols (as preservatives), Vitamins (Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D Supplement, Choline Chloride, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Beta Carotene, Pantothenic Acid, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B-12 Supplement).   Guaranteed Analysis: Crude Protein min. 45%, Crude Fat min. 6%, Crude Fat max. 8%, Crude Fiber max. 8%, Moisture max. 8%, Ash max. 12%, Calcium min. 1.5%, Calcium max. 2%, Phosphorus min. 0.75%. DIRECTIONS: To prepare one cup of product, add ¼ cup of powder into ¾ cup of cold water and stir until blended. Microwave until it starts to boil (typically 2-3 minutes), remove and stir. Alternatively, bring water to a boil on stove, remove from heat, and stir in powder. Immediately pour into a storage container or mould, and let sit at room temp until firm. The finished gel can be cut into cubes, shredded, or used as a whole slab. Whatever is not used immediately should be treated as fresh food. It can be stored sealed in refrigerator for up to two weeks, and in freezer for up to six months. To adjust firmness of gel, use more or less water as desired.

All of that being said, I have now decided to offer this Repashy Soilent Green.

(Please note if just getting food, please use the link on the homepage for food.)

These are very special.  Hard to find color and type.  Nacreous finish in black and white with subtle shades and layers of grey.  Fantastic overall fish, and incredibly active and responsive.  Only two of these left, and this is the best one.  Some batches of fish only come around very occasionally.  I don’t know if or when I’ll ever get these again.  Don’t miss out on this rare and unusual fish.

There will be no more auctions until early January.Â
